Choosing UV-Resistant Flooring For Rooms With Skylights

Posted on

Skylights can beautify almost any room and boost natural light levels. Unfortunately, more sunlight flooding into your room can be a bit of a double-edged sword. Increased exposure to UV sunlight can damage and discolor many materials commonly used in fittings and furniture.

Many popular flooring materials can be vulnerable to intense sunlight exposure, but there are also plenty of high-quality, UV-resistant materials to choose from. If you are looking for new flooring for a room with skylights, the following materials are all excellent choices:

Luxury Vinyl

If you want flooring that combines excellent UV resistance with a premium feel, luxury vinyl flooring products are hard to beat. Luxury vinyl planks and tiles are made from multiple layers of vinyl plastic, which are fused together with heat to form thick, durable floor coverings.

Vinyl is inherently resistant to damage caused by ultraviolet light and can withstand years of exposure without fading, discoloring, or perishing. Most luxury vinyl flooring products are also treated with protective coatings, which dissipate UV light before it can reach and penetrate the underlying plastic.

Luxury vinyl flooring products are incredibly versatile and can be used in almost any type of room fitted with skylights. They are fully waterproof and stainproof, making them ideal for use in kitchens, dining rooms, and lobbies. They are also very hardwearing and are an excellent choice for high-traffic areas in commercial properties or busy households.

Luxury vinyl flooring is also available in a wide variety of designs and colors, which will stay vibrant for years to come. For a classic look, you can find products with convincing wood-grain and natural stone designs. For a more colorful and contemporary look, a huge variety of patterned and solid color designs are also available.

Ceramic Tiles

Ceramic tiles are another excellent, versatile choice for any room fitted with skylights. They are extremely resistant to UV damage, partially because their glazed coatings reflect sunlight. Colors and patterns are also baked into the tiles when they are manufactured, making them much more resistant to fading and discoloration caused by UV rays.

Ceramic floor tiles can be made from a number of different ceramic materials, such as porcelain or stoneware. All are extremely durable and will remain waterproof for many years when coated with a high-quality glaze. They are a classic choice for kitchens and bathrooms with skylights and are also ideal for use in indoor-outdoor transitional areas, such as lobbies and mudrooms.

UV-Resistant Carpets

Hard, durable flooring materials like ceramic and luxury vinyl are a fine choice for many rooms, but if your need flooring for a bedroom or living room with skylights, you might want something a little more forgiving.

Unfortunately, while a high-quality carpet can be very comfortable and inviting, most carpets fade and discolor quickly when exposed to prolonged sunlight. Wool and wool-blend carpets are notorious for fading quickly in sunny environments.

However, many flooring installation services offer specialized, UV-resistant carpets. These carpets are treated with UV-resistant coatings similar to those used on luxury vinyl products, and many are made from synthetic fibers, which are more resistant to UV fading than natural fibers.

The best UV-resistant carpets are made with solution-dyed fibers. These fibers are chemically bonded with dyes and colorants during their creation process. This means they are colored all the way through, and much more resistant to fading than fibers dyed with more conventional methods.
